About the Department

The Department of Geography is one among few departments which as first of Netaji Subhas Open University established in the year 2000. The Department of Geography under the Faculty of Science is offering three years B.Sc. and two years M.Sc. courses. Since the year 2000, it has successfully run with many enrolled learners/students in B.Sc. At present the number of UG Geography Study Centres are 45. Its PG Geography course was initiated in 2006 in three study centres with a student intake capacity of 80. At present the total students intake capacity has increased to 150 in the respective six study centres. Besides, the Ph.D. degree programme is also conducted by the Department. Research and teaching are given equivalent importance by the faculty members. Research projects are encouraged to develop innovative and analytical approach to learning. Experts in different allied fields are also invited for interaction and curriculum development, academic improvement whenever necessary.

The Department organizes field excursion for the PG learners, hands on training on Remote Sensing and GIS softwarein the departmental laboratoryeach year. The department also plans to develop courses on Remote Sensing and GIS for the students so that they can have access to the most updated knowledge of this branch of Geography which is emerging as a potential area of recruitment. The faculties of the department are working hard in writing, editing, and developing Self Learning Materials (SLM), conducting Personal Contact Program (PCPs), practical class, Audio-Video Lectures, lectures for Web Radio, updating syllabus, dedicatedly organizes induction programs, seminar/workshop, engaged in delivering invited lectures, acted as academic resource person, investigating research projects in NSOU along with the collaboration with institutions of foreign countries, contributing to research publicationin various international, national academic journals and books. The faculties also engaged in publishing editorial volumes and writing books.
